Answer: SMA syndrome
Findings: Upper GI series shows a vertical impression on the 3rd part of duodenum. There is no significant dilatation of the stomach and duodenum. Ultrasound & Doppler images show reduced SMA-Aorta angle and reduced SMA – Aorta distance.
Discussion: Measurements of the SMA-aorta angle and Distance in healthy individuals are 25-60 degrees and 2-8mm respectively. In SMA syndrome these are reduced to 6-15 degrees and 2-8mm respectively. These findings should also be taken into consideration while arriving at the diagnosis of SMA syndrome. Dr. Paresh Desai, Goa |
